BC Ferries – the shapes

If you look closely at the BC Ferries cable ferry Baynes Sound Connector, you will see three black shapes and some lights that you won’t see on any other vessel operated by BC Ferries.

The black shapes and three vertical lights indicate that the cable ferry is restricted in her ability to maneuver – this makes sense as while the cable ferry can stop, go, and go the other way, it can’t turn, or maneuver, around an obstacle.

CFR 83.27 – Vessels not under command or restricted in their ability to maneuver (Rule 27).

(b) Vessels restricted in their ability to maneuver. A vessel restricted in her ability to maneuver, except a vessel engaged in mine clearance operations, shall exhibit:

(1) Three all-round lights in a vertical line where they can best be seen. The highest and lowest of these lights shall be red and the middle light shall be white;

(2) Three shapes in a vertical line where they can best be seen. The highest and lowest of these shapes shall be balls and the middle one a diamond;

(3) When making way through the water, masthead lights, sidelights and a stern light, in addition to the lights prescribed in subparagraph (b)(1); and

(4) When at anchor, in addition to the lights or shapes prescribed in subparagraphs (b)(1) and (2), the light, lights or shapes prescribed in Rule 30.
